Discovering Guilin: A Stay at the Shangri-La Hotel
* Published September 2025 *
During our travels through China, we had the pleasure of staying at the Shangri-La Hotel in Guilin, nestled along the banks of the Lijiang River and surrounded by the breathtaking landscape that makes this region so famous.
From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the beauty of the grounds—lush, green, and serene. Although the outdoor pool wasn’t filled during our visit, the indoor pool looked clean, inviting, and ideal for a relaxing swim after a day of exploring. Families will appreciate that the hotel offers a number of kid-friendly activities, though many were closed during our stay due to off-season travel, and most require a small additional fee.
One of the highlights of staying at the Shangri-La Guilin is its direct access to walking paths along the Lijiang River. These peaceful trails are perfect for a morning stroll or an evening wind-down. We also took a river cruise, which gave us front-row views of the region’s famous karst mountains—what we fondly call the “gumdrop mountains.” Seeing them rise out of the misty river landscape was nothing short of magical.
Each morning began with a satisfying breakfast buffet, offering both authentic local specialties and Western comforts like fresh fruit and warm pastries. It was the perfect start to our day, whether we were heading out for sightseeing or staying in to enjoy the amenities.
While some offerings were limited during our off-season visit, the location, scenery, and peaceful ambiance made it a memorable stop on our journey. The Shangri-La Guilin is an excellent base for travelers looking to blend natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a touch of luxury in one of China’s most iconic destinations.
