Many physicians assume that recovery simply means taking time away from work.
But recovery and time off are not always the same thing. A week away can still be filled with notifications, decisions, schedules, and mental stimulation. We may be physically absent from work while remaining cognitively engaged in the same patterns that created exhaustion in the first place.
This is where nature becomes surprisingly powerful.
Researchers have spent decades studying how natural environments affect attention, cognition, and emotional wellbeing. One concept known as Attention Restoration Theory suggests that our brains recover differently in environments that engage attention effortlessly rather than demanding it continuously.
In medicine, our attention is constantly directed. Patient encounters. Clinical decisions. Documentation. Messages. Emails. Responsibilities. The brain becomes accustomed to sustained focus and vigilance.
Over time, this creates cognitive fatigue.
Not because we lack resilience, but because attention itself is a finite resource.
Recently, while walking through Muir Woods, I found myself experiencing what the research describes.
The sounds were subtle. Water moving through small streams. Birds overhead. A gentle breeze moving through the trees. Sunlight filtering through the canopy. No one was asking me to solve a problem. Nothing required an immediate response. The environment invited observation rather than action.
For many high-performing professionals, this is surprisingly rare. We become so accustomed to urgency that stillness can initially feel uncomfortable. We often mistake stimulation for engagement and productivity for progress. Yet the brain appears to recover differently when exposed to natural environments. Attention softens. Mental clutter decreases. Perspective expands.
Standing among redwoods that have existed for centuries, another lesson emerged. The forest operates on a timeline far different from our own. Many of the concerns that dominate a given week begin to feel smaller when viewed against something that has witnessed hundreds of years of change. Not insignificant. Just temporary.
What struck me was learning that fire plays an important role in the health of these forests. While fire appears destructive, it often creates the conditions necessary for renewal. It clears space, releases nutrients, and allows new growth to emerge.
Nature understands something that many high-performing professionals struggle to accept:
Growth and challenge are often intertwined.
The periods of life that feel uncertain, demanding, or disruptive are not always signs that something is wrong. Sometimes they are the very experiences that create the conditions for the next stage of growth.
For physicians, that lesson feels particularly relevant. Careers evolve. Priorities shift. Seasons of life change.
What once required relentless focus may eventually give way to a different understanding of success, purpose, or presence.
Just as the forest is continually renewing itself, we are as well.
Nature offers something increasingly uncommon in modern life:
An environment that asks nothing from us. No performance. No productivity. No achievement. Just presence.
For high-performing professionals experiencing burnout, decision fatigue, or mental exhaustion, this is not a luxury.
It is part of recovery.
The lesson from Muir Woods was not simply that nature is beautiful.
It was that certain environments change how we think. And when we change how we think, we often begin to see our work, our priorities, and our lives differently.

If you are accustomed to operating at a high level every day, recovery requires more than stepping away from work. It requires entering environments that allow the mind to operate differently.
Sometimes restoration begins not with doing less. But with being somewhere that asks less of you.
